Office of Mayor Tom Barrett

The Solid Waste Fee was adopted as part of the 2001 City of Milwaukee budget to partially offset the city's solid waste collection costs. Since the fee only funds a portion of total solid waste costs, the remaining costs will continue to be financed through the property tax levy.

The Solid Waste Fee will appear on your municipal services bill sent by the Milwaukee Water Works. The addition of the Solid Waste Fee to your bill does not change the cost of water, sewer maintenance and sewage treatment services which also appear on this bill.

The Milwaukee Water Works collects these fees on behalf of the City of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Metopolitan Sewerage District. The Water Works passes the collected fees on to the city and the MMSD.

The Solid Waste Fee is based on the number of dwelling units in a building. The fee for 2001 is $33.00 per quarter (3 months) for a single family home. Residences with two to four units are charged $33.00 per quarter for each dwelling unit.

The following chart shows how properties are charged the solid waste fee based on the number of dwelling units:

Property

Dwelling Units(s)

Fee per Quarter

Annual Total

Single Family

$33.00

$132.00

Duplex

$66.00

$264.00

Triplex

$99.00

$396.00

4-Family

$132.00

$528.00

The Solid Waste Fee will not be imposed on apartment buildings with 5 or more units. Apartment buildings with 5 or more units, if serviced by the City of Milwaukee, will receive a bill for the full cost of collection.

Tax exempt properties that receive city solid waste services will be charged a fee for collection. These properties will be charged $33.00 per quarter for each cubic yard of dumpster capacity. Tax exempt properties are required to provide their own refuse containers.

Commercial properties do not receive city solid waste services and therefore will not be charged a fee. The only time a commercial property will be charged a fee is when the property has a residential component. In this case, the residential component of the property will be charged the Solid Waste Fee of $33.00 per quarter per residential unit.
