When directed, the Street Maintenance Section of the Infrastructure Services Division clears
windrows of plowed snow from 2,085 bus stops. Operations are activated at the direction of the
Commissioner of Public Works during the nights following the completion of snow plowing
operations by the Sanitation Division. A general salting operation will not result in a bus stop
clearing.
Clearing operations take place in 12-hour shifts and run for two to three nights depending on
the severity of previous storms.
Not every bus stop within the city is cleared by those operations. State law provides that,
wherever safe, buses may stop in mid intersection to pick up or discharge passengers when bus
stops are obstructed by ice or snow. The list of 2,085 locations reflects that law.
This program clears snow from bus stops landings at all signalized intersections, four-way
controlled intersections, mid-block, far-side and set-back bus stops, and at high movement
locations. The front door landing area is cleared, by an end loader, at all of the listed
locations. Rear door landing areas are cleared at higher traffic areas. Bus stop shelters are
not cleared by the SSM operation.
Questions or complaints regarding specific bus stops can be referred to Street Maintenance at
(414) 286-3431.
