City crews provide weekly garbage collection service to over 200,000 households. Garbage is collected from 95 gallon
semi-automated carts and rear or top load metal boxes.
Garbage should be contained in paper or plastic bags and placed in your collection container. If you have more garbage
then fits in your container, place in plastic bags next to your container.
Please put disposable diapers in a paper or plastic bag before placing them in your container. Do not put loose
disposable diapers in your container.
During non-winter months, residents with street garbage collection (no alleys) are required to place garbage carts at
the curb by 7AM on their designated collection day and return it to the storage location by
10PM the same day. During winter months, carts will be serviced from their storage location.
From the first full week of December through the first full week of April, collection days are not guaranteed due to snow
& ice events and winter holidays. Households with alleys are not required to move carts to
the curb since carts are stored and emptied at the alley line.
We've simplified garbage collection so you can now place bulky items (not more than the size of two couches) at your
collection point on your scheduled collection day. Your regular collection crew is instructed to take your extra items.

Help keep our rivers and Lake Michigan clean. Please pick up after your pet. Pet waste left on the lawn or next to the sidewalk washes into storm drains directly in to the rivers and Lake Michigan. Double- wrap pet waste in plastic bags. Seal the bags and put them in your collection container.
