Who must obtain a permit?
All motor vehicles apply with the following exceptions:
- Vehicles used for commercial purposes, and which are larger than 21 feet in
length, 7 feet in width, and 7 feet in height and which have more than 2
single-tired wheels on the front axle and more than 2 single-tired or
double-tired wheels on the rear axle, are not eligible for night parking
permits.
- Motor trucks, except as provided elsewhere in the code, luxury limousines, motor
buses, motor delivery wagons, trailers, semitrailers, camping trailers, motor homes,
mobile homes and tractors are not eligible for night parking permits.
- Vehicles bearing "Disabled Driver" license plates
are exempt from purchasing night parking permits. Those vehicles displaying a "Disabled Driver"
hang-tag must still display a special disabled night permit that is free to owners of the
valid disabled hang tag.
- Vehicles displaying a night parking permit must
display a valid license plate.
- Night parking permits can be used for City-owned parking lots requiring permits at any time of day.
Vehicles may not be parked more than 24 hours.

An Application for a Night Parking Permit will include the following:
- Name and City of Milwaukee address of the permit applicant.
- The license plate number, state of issuance, make, model and body type of the vehicle.
- The expiration date of the permit applied for.
- Call the Violations Bureau at (414) 344-0840 if there is a change to the application.

Disabled Drivers:
Vehicles bearing current registration plates for disabled drivers issued under s.341.12(1), (1a), (1m), or (1q), Wis. Stats., or a motor vehicle under which a current special identification card issued under s.343.51, Wis. Stats., is displayed, excepting motor buses and motor trucks, shall be exempt from purchasing overnight parking permits, but shall be required to park in accordance with all other provisions contained herein.
Those vehicles displaying a 'Disabled Driver' hang-tag must
display a special disabled night permit, but it is free of charge and is available ONLY
at police district stations.
- Cost of Night Parking Permit:
- $44.00/year or $12.00/quarter
- Special Disabled Night Parking Permits are
free of charge to those who possess a valid disabled hang-tag.
- Quarters: January-March; April-June; July-September; October-December.
- Permits may be purchased at any
time within the quarter, beginning on the 20th day of the month preceding the
start of the quarter. Annual permits may be purchased beginning on the 20th
day of the month preceding the beginning of the year and can be purchased at
any time of the year prorated by the quarter in which the permit is purchased.
- No refund or free replacement of a lost or stolen permit will be allowed.
- Night parking permits can be purchased at any Police District
Station. Call (414) 933-4444 for location of the Police District Station
nearest you, or get a list of district
station locations.
- Night parking permits can be purchased at the Automated Payment Centers
located at Police District Stations #2, #3, #5, #6 and #7.
- Special Disabled Night Parking Permits can
ONLY be obtained in person at local district police stations.

- Primary location for automobiles and trucks is the inside upper corner of the
rear window on the driver's side.
- Primary location for motorcycles is the inside lower left corner of the
windshield or on the gas tank.
- Primary location for jeeps, convertibles or other vehicle with a non-glass rear
window is the inside lower left corner of the front windshield on the driver's
side.
- Primary location for vehicles with deeply-tinted rear windows, no rear window
or any other factor that impedes visibility, place permit in the inside lower
left corner of the front windshield on the driver's side.
- Parking is permitted on a temporary basis for special situations or circumstances (i.e. out of
town visitors, street or alley construction project). Permission may be obtained each
night by calling (414)286-8300 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 1:00 AM Sunday
through Friday. Permission will not be granted more than 3 times in a 30 day period. Night
parking permission can be granted for up to 30 days for street and alley construction projects.
Be prepared to provide the following information when calling for night permission:
- Address where the vehicle is parked
- License plate number
- Online Night Parking Permissions.

- The City of Milwaukee purchased Automated Payment Centers to sell
night parking permits and to receive payment for parking citations.
- The Automated Payment Centers are currently
located in Police Districts #2, #3, #5, #6 and #7.
- The Automated Payment Centers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and
are in both English and Spanish. They take cash (bills not larger than $20),
check (read only--no need to fill out the check) or credit card for payment of
night parking permits and parking citations. All transactions are in real time
with no delay in processing the night parking permit application or a parking
citation.
- If you have purchased a night parking permit within the last 12 months, the
permit information will appear on the screen and all you have to do is update
the information, if necessary. If you have never purchased a permit, you can
apply at the payment center by entering all requested information.
- The cost of the night parking permit will remain at $12 per quarter and $44
per year. There is no transaction fee to use the payment center to purchase a
permit.
- Parking citations can be paid with cash, check or credit card at the Automated
Payment Center. There is a transaction fee of $1.

- Who May Apply?
Residents living in houses built prior to October 27, 1970, and where the residence does not provide a minimum of one parking space per dwelling unit, or if the dwelling unit is in a building of over three stories, the parking does not provide at least 2 parking spaces per 3 dwelling units.
- This application includes:
Milwaukee Code of Ordinances 101-27.5(3)
- The name and address of the owner or operator.
- The license number, make and year of each vehicle.
- The location where the applicant requests to park the vehicle.
- A sworn statement that the applicant resides at the address given and that the residence qualifies under sub 2-a, b or c. If the applicant is applying under sub. 2-b, the sworn statement shall include physical dimensions of the parking space and the applicant’s vehicle, including photographs of each. If the applicant is applying under sub 2-c, the sworn statement shall include an attached statement from a physician for the disabled person that the applicant’s vehicle is needed to transport that person.
- Cost of Permit:
$10.00 /year or $3.00 /quarter
- Permit applications and permit renewals must be made at the Police District Station of the district in which the vehicle will be parked.

- Where to Place Permit:

- Which Residences Qualify:
This permit applies only to certain congested areas of the City near
factories, schools, hospitals or large employment centers, which have been
specially designated as "Commuter Impacted" by the Common Council. A
residence qualifies for this permit if the hourly parking limit sign(s) on
the block on which it is located contain the words "and permit" following
the words "except Saturday, Sunday" or "except Sunday." Only one such permit
may be issued to an eligible household.
Look for a listing of eligible areas (MCO 101-27.9-c1-c19).
- Permit Application Includes:
- The name, address and Wisconsin driver’s license number of the owner or
operator of each vehicle.

At the time of application, each applicant must present to the Police
Department a valid driver’s license with the same address as stated on
the application and the motor vehicle registration for each vehicle
listed on the application.

Station of the district in which the vehicle will be parked.

- Night Workers
In the case of night workers who
are not provided with off-street parking facilities by their employers the
Chief of Police shall, subject to the approval of the common council, designate
suitable locations where such night workers shall be permitted to park their
automobiles during the period of their employment. The permit shall be displayed
in the lower left hand corner of the windshield. The chief of police, under
this authority, may also issue the shift workers permit to car-pooling workers
who must park on-street as a necessary part of their car-pooling arrangement.
