Parking Regulations Milwaukee DPW Home FAQ

The City of Milwaukee has a myriad of parking regulations. The following includes highlights of the most common regulations.

To obtain the posted parking regulations for a specific street go to Street Parking Regulations. This site only includes parking regulations that are posted. Note: Most residential streets have alternate side night parking throughout the year with a valid night parking permit or night parking permission. These streets are not posted. However, there are a number of streets that are exceptions to the night parking rule. Please go to Winter Parking for more information on these exceptions or go to Winter Parking Regulations page for a list of streets. These streets are not posted.

Daytime Parking
  • If a street has no posted time restrictions, vehicles may park on-street all day.
  • If hourly parking exists, parking is limited to the posted time restrictions.
  • Residential Daytime Parking Privilege for Nonconforming Residential Uses (MCO 101-27.5).
  • For Residential Daytime Parking Privilege for Commuter Parking Impacted Areas and to obtain a list of streets (MCO 101-27.7).
  • To obtain permits for Residential Daytime Parking Privilege for Nonconforming Residential Uses and for Commuter Parking Impacted Areas go to the Parking Services Permits page.
  • For off-street parking options in the Milwaukee downtown area west of the Milwaukee river visit www.parkmilwaukee.com.
Night Parking

Most residential streets have alternate side night parking throughout the year with a valid night parking permit or night parking permission. These streets are not posted. However, there are a number of streets that are exceptions to the night parking rule. Please go to Winter Parking for more information on these exceptions or go to Winter Parking Regulations page for a list of streets.

  • On even-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle with a valid night permit must be legally parked on the side of the street with even house numbers; on odd-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle must be parked on the side of the street with odd house numbers.
  • Night Parking During Snow Emergency: If a snow emergency has been declared, night parking regulations are in effect from 11:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. on all city streets regardless of the winter parking regulation.
  • Parking is allowed between 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. with a valid night parking permit or night parking permission with the following exceptions:
    1. Sunday morning
    2. Morning of the day and morning of the day following: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
    3. Parking is permitted for a period not to exceed one hour in the same block in which a business establishment licensed by the City is open for business between 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M.
    4. Licensed physicians and ordained clergy in emergency situations
Winter Parking

To obtain the posted parking regulations for a specific street go to Street Parking Regulations. This site only includes parking regulations that are posted. Note: Some winter parking regulations are not posted. For a list of these streets please go to the Winter Parking Regulations page.

  • NO PARKING DECEMBER 1 TO MARCH 1

No overnight parking is allowed on through highways and mass transit (bus) routes from December 1 to March 1. These streets are not posted. For a list of these streets please go to the Winter Parking Regulations page. In case of a "Snow Emergency" prior to December 1 or after March 1, vehicles must be moved to a side street and must be legally parked in conformity with all other regulations on the proper side of the street.

  • EXCEPTION TO ALTERNATE SIDE NIGHT PARKING

Overnight parking is allowed on both sides of the street from March 1 to December 1. Alternate side night parking is allowed from December 1 to March 1. These streets are not posted. For a list of these streets please go to the Winter Parking Regulations page.

  • 4" RULE

Certain residential streets are posted "No Parking When Snow Falls 4 Inches or More". Parking is allowed on both sides of the street, except when snow has accumulated on the street surface to the depth of 4 inches or more. Then no parking is allowed on the side of the street where the sign is posted until the snow has been removed--day or night or at any time of the year. To determine whether this regulation applies to a specific street go to Street Parking Regulations.

  • SPECIFIC SIDE PARKING

Certain residential streets are restricted to parking on a specific side of the street during the winter months. These streets are posted with signs reading "No Parking" on one side of the street, either for the entire December 1 to March 1 period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side. To determine whether this regulation applies to a specific street go to Street Parking Regulations.

  • NIGHT PARKING DURING SNOW EMERGENCY

If a snow emergency has been declared, night parking regulations are in effect from 11:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. on all city streets regardless of the winter parking regulation.

  • SNOW ROUTE TOW-AWAY ZONE

A "Snow Emergency" is declared to exist whenever snow falls during any period of 24 hours or less to a depth which is determined and declared by the Commissioner of Public Works to constitute a serious public hazard impairing transportation, the movement of food and fuel supplies, medical care, fire, health, and police protection, and other vital facilities of the City. Such an emergency is declared to continue for a period of 72 hours or until such earlier times as snow plowing operations have been declared completed by the Commissioner of Public Works. "Snow Emergencies" are widely publicized on local radio and television stations. In addition, "Temporary No Parking Tow Away" signs may be posted by the City to assist in clean-up after major snowfalls. Vehicles parked in violation of "Snow Route Tow-Away Zone" and "Temporary No Parking Tow Away" signs or obstructing traffic during a "Snow Emergency" will be towed away at owner's expense. There are no exceptions.

  • MPS PARKING FOR SNOW EMERGENCIES

Milwaukee Public Schools make some of its playgrounds and parking lots available for overnight parking during declared snow emergencies and clean-up periods. Take a look at Snow Emergency, Off-Street Parking on School Playgrounds List. Call the Department of Public Works Information Center at (414) 286-8282 during regular business hours for the location of a playground nearest your home.
